Free Heating Grants For Tenants
Many people are able to take advantage of Free Heating Grants, and this also includes tenants who are also eligible to apply for funding from the Government-backed ECO Scheme. Assistance could be available to private tenants who are in receipt of certain qualifying benefits to help them have gas central heating fitted for the first time.
Free Heating Grants can assist tenants who would benefit from an upgrade in the heating system in their rented property and who would likely be unable to afford to replace it themselves, and would struggle with the cost of heating their homes. If you live in a rented property that has no gas central heating system, or operates electric heating or some other form of alternative heating system, we could help you convert to a much more energy efficient system.
A Free Heating Grant could help those living in private rented accommodation save hundreds on their heating bills annually. It is part of the Government scheme aimed at making energy bills more affordable and reducing the carbon footprint of households using old inefficient heating.
How do I qualify for a Free Heating Grant?
Private tenants, but not those who live in local authority properties, who claim at least one of the qualifying benefits could be eligible for a Free Heating Grant. They are intended for tenants in rented accommodation that have not previously been fitted with a gas central heating system or operate an inefficient electrical heating system.
Although the property is owned by the landlord, the application for a Grant would be made by the tenant. The scheme is not open to tenants in social housing which includes council owned properties and housing association homes.
What does a Free Heating Grant provide?
The grant scheme provides tenants with the opportunity to have a central heating system installed free of charge. This includes all aspects including a new boiler, radiators, pipes and control panels. If you have an electrical heating system then we could help you switch to a gas boiler system or upgrade your electrical heating system.

Is there any other help for private tenants?
Even if you are not in receipt of any of the qualifying benefits mentioned above, you may still be eligible for assistance. You should always apply, even if you are not sure, as we can advise you on other benefits or discounts that might be available.
What are the benefits of the Free Heating Grant Scheme?
The Free Heating Grant scheme can provide households, including those in private rented accomodation, with access to funding to help improve the energy efficiency of their home. This not only has environmental benefits but also produces big savings for householders.
A new central heating system fitted in a rented property working at 90%+ energy efficiency could bring annual savings on heating bills in excess of £300. Additionally, the added efficiency of a new boiler also helps reduce the carbon footprint of households assisted by the scheme.
