Free Heating Grants for Single Parents
Keeping your home warm can be a worry when you’re a single parent, perhaps on a limited income. When you are having to watch the pennies, the last thing you want to be doing is using an old inefficient heating system that wastes a large proportion of the money that you throw at it.
Thankfully, help is available for some single parents who meet the qualifying criteria for funding to help replace the heating system that is currently in their home. Free Heating Grants are available from the Government-backed ECO scheme to UK residents, including single parents, who currently receive at least one of the qualifying benefits.
What do I get with a Free Heating Grant?
If you are a single parent and eligible for a Free Heating Grant, the great news is that this can help you get a gas central heating system fitted in your home for the first time, or at least give you access to a heating upgrade to your current system. This includes a new boiler, pipework, radiators and heating controls.
Free Heating Grants are targeted at households that have never had gas central heating in their home before and would benefit hugely from the cost savings that a new heating system would bring. It is open to those who have never had a gas boiler system before, or those who operate old inefficient heating to heat their homes, such as an electric heating system.
If you qualify for a Free Heating Grant then the costs of removal, installation and aftercare for your new central heating system would be covered, so it wouldn’t need to cost a thing.
How do I qualify for a Free Heating Grant?
If you are a single parent with a low family income, and currently receive tax credits, then you could be eligible for a Free Heating Grant. Single parents meeting the eligibility criteria who have a child under 16 have a particularly good chance of qualifying for a Free Heating Grant.
Free Heating Grants can be awarded to those who currently….
- Are a homeowner/tenant
- Have no gas boiler
- Have never had central heating or need to upgrade their existing heating system
- Receive one or more of the qualifying benefits
So what are all the different qualifying benefits?
For single parents the most relevant benefit is likely to be child tax credits, but the Free Heating Grants could be available to those in receipt of any of following benefits:
- Disability Living Allowance
- Personal Independence Payment
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Severe Disablement Allowance
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefits
- Ministry of Justice Benefits
- War Pensions Mobility Supplement
- Constant Attendance Allowance
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
- Child Benefit
Is there any other way to qualify for help if I don’t receive one of the named benefits?
It is possible that you may still be able to receive assistance with central heating, even if you do not receive any of the benefits mentioned above. Local authorities do provide grants under ECO Flex system, whereby funding is available for households that are in fuel poverty and will struggle to heat their homes. Funding in some instances may also be available for homes that do not currently have a gas supply and need to be hooked up the mains in order to take advantage of any central heating grants available.
How much would I be likely to save with a new central heating system?
A Free Heating Grant would give you a brand new central heating system that will bring significant savings when it comes to your heating bills. A new gas boiler is likely to operate at an energy efficiency level of 90%+ meaning that much less energy is wasted in generating the heat for your home.
Replacing your old heating system will reduce both your heating bills and your carbon footprint, bringing benefits to the environment too. Using a new energy efficient central heating system could save you over £300 annually on your heating bills.
With Free Heating Grants, it will be massively beneficial for you as you’ll be saving money as well as being able to enjoy a much more comfortable heated home when you most need it.
